What this calculator does
This simple tool converts a percent-off discount into the exact amount you save and the final price you pay. Enter the original price and the discount percentage; the calculator instantly returns the discount amount, final price, and the percentage you still pay. It also supports copying or sharing the result for easy record-keeping.
Why this is useful
- Shop smarter: compare sale tags quickly and see real savings rather than guessing.
- Budgeting: plan purchases and understand how sequential coupons or taxes will affect the final cost.
- Teaching & testing: great for homework and practice with percentages.
How to use the calculator
- Type the Original Price (e.g.,
149.99). - Enter the Discount Percent (e.g.,
25for 25% off). - Click Calculate (or press Enter). The tool shows:
- Discount amount (how many dollars you save),
- Final price (what you pay), and
- Percentage paid (100% − discount%).
How it works
- Discount amount =
Original Price × (Discount % / 100) - Final price =
Original Price − Discount amount - Percentage paid =
100 − Discount %
If you know final price and want the discount rate:
- Discount % =
100 × (Original Price − Final Price) / Original Price.
Quick example
Original price = $200, Discount = 15%
- Discount amount = $200 × 0.15 = $30
- Final price = $200 − $30 = $170
- Percentage paid = 85%
Advanced tips
- Stacked discounts: If you apply multiple percentage discounts one after another (e.g., 20% then 10%), the second percent applies to the already-reduced price not the original so total savings < simple sum of percentages. (Use the calculator repeatedly for precision.)
- Including tax: If you want the amount you actually pay at checkout, calculate the final price first and then apply tax on the final price (
Final × (1 + taxRate/100)). - Reverse lookup: When a seller advertises a percentage but shows only sale price, use the reverse formula above to verify the actual discount.
Parameter explained
- Original Price: The product’s full price before any discount. Enter a positive number (decimals allowed).
- Discount Percent: The percentage off the original price (0–100). Enter
25for 25% off.
FAQ
Q.1 What if discount > 100%?
A: That’s invalid the calculator prevents it. Discounts above 100% would imply negative final prices.
Q.2 How do I compare two discounts?
A: Calculate each final price separately and compare dollar savings or final price values.
