What Actually is Torque?

The Newton-Meter (N·m)

One newton-meter is exactly what it sounds like: the torque created by applying a force of one Newton perpendicularly to the end of a one-meter-long lever. You will see N·m used almost exclusively on modern automotive specifications, precision electronics, and imported heavy machinery.
The Foot-Pound (ft-lb)
Primarily used in the United States and the UK, the foot-pound operates on the exact same logic. It represents one pound of force applied at a right angle to a lever that is one foot long.
An Expert Note on Phrasing: If you spend time on engineering forums, you will often see debates about “foot-pounds” versus “pound-feet” (lb-ft). Technically speaking, pound-feet is the correct nomenclature for torque, while foot-pounds measures work or energy. However, in automotive garages, hardware stores, and general industry, “ft-lbs” has become the universally accepted shorthand for torque. Navigating the Specialty Units
Kilogram-force centimeters (kgf·cm): Commonly found in older Japanese service manuals, robotics, and smaller mechanical assemblies. Because a centimeter is a much shorter lever arm than a meter, the resulting numerical values are much higher for the same amount of torque.
Joules per radian (J/rad): This is where physics gets interesting. A Joule is a unit of energy (work), not force. However, physically speaking, a Newton-meter is dimensionally equivalent to a Joule. In advanced physics and rotational mechanics, torque is sometimes expressed as energy per angle of rotation (Joules per radian). For practical conversion purposes, 1 N·m is exactly equal to 1 J/rad.
Kilopondmeters (kgm): A “kilopond” is another term for a kilogram-force. This unit was heavily used in European automotive engineering in the mid-20th century before the strict adoption of the modern SI system.
