This calculator converts a fraction or mixed number to a percent, and a percent back to a simplified fraction. It shows every step, not just the final answer. Use it for homework, or any time you need to switch between fractions and percentages.

How to Use This Calculator

The calculator has two tabs: Fraction → Percent and Percent → Fraction.

To convert a fraction to a percent:

  1. Stay on the Fraction → Percent tab.
  2. Type the numerator (top number) and the denominator (bottom number). For a mixed number like 2 1/5, also type the whole number (2) in the Whole number box.
  3. Pick a setting in the Round to menu. The default is 2 decimal places. Choose “No rounding (exact value)” to see the exact answer, such as 33 1/3% instead of 33.33%.
  4. Click Convert (or press Enter).
  5. Click Show the work to see every step.

To convert a percent to a fraction:

  1. Open the Percent → Fraction tab.
  2. Type the percent without the % sign. Decimals are fine (12.5). For a fraction of a percent, type it like 33 1/3 or 1/2.
  3. Click Convert. The answer appears as a simplified fraction, with a mixed number and decimal when they apply.

Tips:

  • Reverse converts your answer back the other way so you can check it.
  • Use a period for decimals (12.5, not 12,5), and don’t type commas in numbers.
  • For a test score, put the points you earned on top and the total points on the bottom.
  • For a mixed number, use whole numbers in the numerator and denominator, and put any minus sign on the whole number.

Fraction to Percent Formula

P = (n ÷ d) × 100

where P is the percent, n is the numerator, and d is the denominator. To go the other way: fraction = P ÷ 100, then simplify.

How to Convert a Fraction to a Percent

There are two simple ways to convert a fraction to a percent:

Method 1: Divide, Then Multiply by 100

  • Step 1: Divide the numerator (top number) by the denominator (bottom number) to get a decimal. If it doesn’t divide evenly, use long division with decimals. Example: 3 ÷ 8 = 0.375.
  • Step 2: Multiply the decimal by 100 and add the % sign. Example: 0.375 × 100 = 37.5%.

Method 2: Make the Denominator 100

  • This method works best when the denominator is a factor of 100 (2, 4, 5, 10, 20, 25, or 50).
  • Example: 9/25. Since 25 × 4 = 100, multiply the top and bottom by 4: (9 × 4) / (25 × 4) = 36/100. Percent means “per 100,” so 36/100 = 36%.

How to Convert a Mixed Number to a Percent

  • Example: convert 2 1/5 to a percent.
  • First write it as an improper fraction: (2 × 5 + 1) / 5 = 11/5.
  • Then divide: 11 ÷ 5 = 2.2.
  • Finally multiply by 100: 2.2 × 100 = 220%. A percent over 100% is normal for any number greater than 1.

How to Convert a Percent to a Fraction

Method 1: Whole-Number Percents

  • Step 1: Write the percent over 100. Example: 45% = 45/100.
  • Step 2: Simplify by dividing the top and bottom by their greatest common factor (GCF). Here the GCF is 5: 45 ÷ 5 = 9 and 100 ÷ 5 = 20. So 45% = 9/20.

Method 2: Percents With Decimals

  • Step 1: Write the percent over 100. Example: 17.5% = 17.5/100.
  • Step 2: Remove the decimal. Count the digits after the decimal point and multiply the top and bottom by 10 for each digit (10 for one digit, 100 for two, 1000 for three). 17.5 has one digit after the decimal point: (17.5 × 10) / (100 × 10) = 175/1000.
  • Step 3: Simplify. The GCF of 175 and 1000 is 25, so 175 ÷ 25 = 7 and 1000 ÷ 25 = 40. Therefore 17.5% = 7/40.

Percents Over 100% and Fractions of a Percent (33 1/3%)

Percents over 100%. A percent over 100% is worth more than one whole, so it becomes an improper fraction or a mixed number. Example: 125% = 125/100 = 5/4 = 1 1/4. Likewise, 250% = 5/2 = 2 1/2.

Fractions of a percent. Some percents include a fraction, like 33 1/3% or 1/2%. Turn the mixed percent into an improper fraction first, then put it over 100.

  1. Write 33 1/3 as an improper fraction: (33 × 3 + 1) / 3 = 100/3.
  2. Divide by 100: (100/3) ÷ 100 = 100/300.
  3. Simplify. The GCF of 100 and 300 is 100, so 33 1/3% = 1/3.

Another example: 1/2% = (1/2) ÷ 100 = 1/200. To use the calculator for this, type 33 1/3 or 1/2 in the Percent box.

Note: Percents with a fraction (8 1/3%, 16 2/3%, 33 1/3%, 66 2/3%, 83 1/3%) are exact. Rounded percents like 33.33% are slightly different: 33.33% = 3333/10000, not 1/3.

Tested Examples

We tested the calculator with the following inputs to confirm it produces accurate results:

Test Case 1 (Terminating decimal):

  • Input: Numerator = 3, Denominator = 8, Round to = 2 decimal places
  • Output: 3/8 = 37.5% (decimal 0.375)

Test Case 2 (Mixed number):

  • Input: Whole number = 2, Numerator = 1, Denominator = 5
  • Output: 2 1/5 = 220% (decimal 2.2)

Test Case 3 (Repeating decimal):

  • Input: Numerator = 1, Denominator = 3, Round to = 2 decimal places
  • Output: 1/3 ≈ 33.33%, with the exact value shown as 33 1/3%

Test Case 4 (Fraction of a percent):

  • Input: Percent → Fraction tab, Percent = 33 1/3
  • Output: 33 1/3% = 1/3

Test Case 5 (Rounded percent is not exactly 1/3):

  • Input: Percent → Fraction tab, Percent = 33.33
  • Output: 33.33% = 3333/10000

Test Case 6 (Percent over 100%):

  • Input: Percent → Fraction tab, Percent = 125
  • Output: 125% = 5/4, also shown as the mixed number 1 1/4

Common Mistakes When Converting Fractions and Percents

  • Dividing the wrong way round. For 3/8, divide 3 ÷ 8 = 0.375, not 8 ÷ 3 = 2.6667 (which would give 266.67%). A fraction smaller than 1 must give a percent smaller than 100%.
  • Forgetting to multiply by 100. 3/8 = 0.375 = 37.5%, not 0.375%.
  • Forgetting to simplify. 45/100 is correct but unfinished. Divide both numbers by the GCF (5) to get 9/20.
  • Treating a rounded percent as exact. 8.33% is not exactly 1/12. 8.33% = 833/10000, while 1/12 = 8 1/3%. The same applies to 16.67%, 33.33%, 66.67% and 83.33%.
  • Changing only the top or bottom number. When you remove a decimal (17.5/100 → 175/1000), multiply both the numerator and the denominator by the same number.
