Calculation Options

i
Evenly-spaced: Equal spacing between all spindles, including ends.

Centered: Maximum spacing between spindles with equal end gaps for symmetry.

Railing Details

i
The horizontal distance between the inside faces of your two railing posts. Measure from the inner edge of one post to the inner edge of the opposite post.
i
The thickness of each spindle/baluster measured at its widest point. For square spindles, measure one side. For turned spindles, measure the widest part.
i
The maximum gap allowed between spindles by building codes. Most residential codes require 4 inches (10 cm) or less to prevent small children from passing through.

Evenly-Spaced Spindles

spindles
i
The gap between each spindle. This includes the space at both ends. All gaps are equal in evenly-spaced configuration.

Centered Spindles

spindles
i
The gap between spindles in the middle section. This uses the maximum allowable spacing to minimize the number of spindles needed.
i
The gap between the railing post and the first/last spindle. Both end gaps are equal to create a centered, symmetrical appearance.
